German Marquez tossed seven efficient innings Sunday and Hunter Goodman knocked in five runs as the Colorado Rockies snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 9-3 win over the visiting San Diego Padres in Denver.

After the game, however, the Rockies announced the firing of manager Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redmond. Despite the win, Colorado is a league-worst 7-33 on the season. Third base coach Warren Schaeffer was named interim manager with hitting coach Clint Hurdle elevated to interim bench coach.

Marquez (1-6) entered the day with a 9.90 earned-run average but looked more like the pitcher who was 10-4 in his career against San Diego. He allowed just three hits and a run with one walk and two strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 8.27.

Nick Pivetta (5-2) lasted only four innings for San Diego, permitting six runs off seven hits and two walks while fanning five. It was his second-shortest outing of the year.

Twins 7, Giants 6 (10 innings)

DaShawn Keirsey Jr. lined a game-winning single down the left field line to lift Minnesota over San Francisco in Minneapolis.

Teammates mobbed Keirsey after the hit, which gave Minnesota its eighth win in a row. Brooks Lee finished 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs.

Heliot Ramos went 2-for-2 with a homer and four RBIs to lead San Francisco, which was swept in the three-game series. Jung Hoo Lee and David Villar drove in one run apiece.

Cardinals 6, Nationals 1

Miles Mikolas gave up one run over 5 1/3 innings while Lars Nootbaar, Nolan Arenado and Willson Contreras homered to give visiting St. Louis a victory in Washington and an eighth straight win.

Mikolas (2-2) allowed just four hits while striking out five and walking one before the Cardinals’ bullpen combined to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. St. Louis’ eight-game winning streak is the club’s longest since winning eight in a row in August 2022.

MacKenzie Gore (2-4) allowed four runs on five hits across 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven and walking three for the Nationals. Nathaniel Lowe’s solo home run accounted for Washington’s only run as it dropped its fifth in a row.

Red Sox 3, Royals 1

Wilyer Abreu homered and singled twice to help visiting Boston to a win against Kansas City in the rubber game of their three-game series.

Rafael Devers homered, singled and drove in the other two runs for the Red Sox, who have won four of five. Lucas Giolito (1-1) made his third start of the season for Boston and allowed one unearned run and two hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Justin Wilson and Greg Weissert combined for 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Royals starter Seth Lugo (3-4) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Kansas City had won seven of eight and 10 of 12.

White Sox 4, Marlins 2

Tim Elko crashed a three-run homer in the sixth for his first major league hit as host Chicago won the rubber match against Miami.

Elko, the minor leagues’ co-leader in home runs with 10 in 31 games, was called up before Saturday’s game and was 0-for-5 before breaking a 1-1 tie with his blast off Sandy Alcantara (2-5). Mike Vasil (2-1) threw three innings of one-run relief as White Sox starter Sean Burke, who allowed four hits and five walks but only one run, needed 91 pitches to get through four innings.

Alcantara struck out eight over 5 2/3 innings, but surrendered four runs, seven hits and three walks. Xavier Edwards and Connor Norby cracked two hits apiece for the Marlins, who had two runners caught stealing and another picked off third.

Rangers 6, Tigers 1

Nathan Eovaldi allowed just two hits in seven scoreless innings as visiting Texas downed Detroit.

Eovaldi (4-2) walked one and struck out seven while recording his fifth consecutive quality start. He has won all four of his career starts at Detroit’s Comerica Park. Chris Martin, Jacob Latz and Robert Garcia pitched the last two innings to complete the victory. Marcus Semien and Josh Jung supplied two-run homers and Jonah Heim added a solo shot.

Jung’s brother Jace started at third base for the Tigers. Detroit starter Reese Olson (4-3) allowed three runs and seven hits with five strikeouts in four innings. Spencer Torkelson ended the shutout bid with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Dodgers 8, Diamondbacks 1

Freddie Freeman had four hits that included a home run and posted three RBIs, Mookie Betts homered among his three hits, and Los Angeles salvaged a series split with Arizona with a win in Phoenix.

Will Smith had two hits and two RBIs, Shohei Ohtani and Andy Pages had two hits and an RBI apiece and Michael Conforto had two hits for the Dodgers, who tied a season high with 18 hits.

Los Angeles starter Tony Gonsolin (2-0) gave up three hits in five innings to win his third start of the season. He struck out four, walked two and pitched out of two-on, two-out situations in the first and third innings to preserve a 1-0 lead. The Dodgers have won 11 of 15.

Pirates 4, Braves 3

Joey Bart had two hits and the walk-off fielder’s choice in the bottom of the ninth to give Pittsburgh the victory over Atlanta and the squad’s first series win since April 22-24.

Pirates starter Carmen Mlodzinski went a career-high 5 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Dennis Santana (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth. Bart and Ke’Bryan Hayes each went 2-for-5 as the Pirates played without Oneil Cruz, who sat due to lower back tightness.

The Braves’ Sean Murphy poked a three-run double in the eighth to erase Pittsburgh’s 3-0 lead. Drake Baldwin and Nick Allen posted two hits apiece. Starter Chris Sale gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings as he fanned eight and walked two. Raisel Iglesias (2-3) gave up two hits, one walk and the game-winning run in the ninth.

Brewers 4, Rays 2

Christian Yelich went 2-for-4 with a homer, stolen base and two runs as visiting Milwaukee snapped a three-game slide with the win over Tampa Bay.

Yelich and William Contreras hit back-to-back homers in the fourth to claim a 2-1 lead against former Brewers pitcher Drew Rasmussen (1-4). Yelich added an insurance run in the eighth when he singled, swiped second and scored on Rhys Hoskins’ single. Tyler Alexander (2-3) retired all five batters he faced in relief of starter Chad Patrick, who gave up two runs and six hits with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.

Jonathan Aranda went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI and Chandler Simpson poked two doubles to pace the Rays’ offense. Rasmussen gave up four hits and three runs during his five-inning effort.

Mets 6, Cubs 2

Francisco Lindor sparked a four-run eighth with a tiebreaking home run as New York defeated visiting Chicago in the deciding game of their three-game series.

Mark Vientos added an RBI single and Brandon Nimmo capped the eighth with a two-run homer. Lindor, Vientos, Nimmo and Francisco Alvarez posted two hits apiece for the Mets. Griffin Canning’s five-start winning streak ended despite allowing just one run on two hits over six innings. Ryan Stanek (1-3) threw a perfect eighth.

Pete Crow-Armstrong homered in the sixth and Nico Hoerner added a game-tying RBI single in the seventh for the Cubs, who have lost four of five. Starter Matthew Boyd allowed two runs and six hits with eight strikeouts over six innings. Porter Hodge (2-1) surrendered three runs and three hits in 1/3 of an inning.

Astros 6, Reds 0

Ronel Blanco twirled eight impressive innings and Yainer Diaz clubbed a three-run home run as Houston claimed the rubber match of its three-game interleague series against visiting Cincinnati.

Blanco (3-3) produced his best start of the season, allowing just two hits and one walk while recording a career-high 11 strikeouts. He retired the first nine batters he faced and did give up a hit until there was one out in the fifth inning.

Reds rookie right-hander Chase Petty (0-2) sidestepped a pair of baserunners in the first and second innings but couldn’t wiggle out of trouble in the third after Isaac Paredes doubled with one out and Christian Walker followed with a single. Diaz then hit his fourth homer of the season to give the Astros more than enough runs.

Yankees 12, Athletics 2

Ben Rice hit his first career grand slam, Aaron Judge singled in two runs among his four hits and New York beat the Athletics in the rubber match of a three-game series in West Sacramento, Calif.

Paul Goldschmidt had three doubles with two RBIs for the Yankees, who recorded 15 hits and won for the fourth time in their last five games. Judge went 4-for-5 and raised his batting average to a major league-leading .409. New York starter Ryan Yarbrough (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts over five innings.

JJ Bleday homered for the Athletics, who allowed 29 runs in the series and lost for the fourth time in their last five games.

Orioles 7, Angels 3

Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run sixth inning and help Baltimore beat mistake-plagued Los Angeles at Anaheim, Calif.

Henderson and Cedric Mullins each had two hits and two runs as the Orioles took two of three in the series after losing their previous five games. Maverick Handley drove in two runs without benefit of a hit. Starter Zach Eflin (3-1) gave up two runs, five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings. Eflin (lat) was activated from the 10-day injured list before the game for his first outing since April 7.

Tyler Ward and Logan O’Hoppe had RBI hits for the Angels, who lost for the third time in the past four games. Matthew Lugo smacked his first major league homer. Tyler Anderson (2-1) allowed three runs (one earned), four hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings.

Phillies 3, Guardians 0

Kyle Schwarber extended his on-base streak to 46 games with a pair of home runs and Zack Wheeler worked seven dominant innings as Philadelphia beat host Cleveland in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Schwarber hit a solo homer in the first and a two-run blast in the eighth, moving into a tie with the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge for the major league lead with 14 home runs. His on-base streak is the fourth-longest in Phillies history, 10 behind Mike Schmidt’s 56-game run in 1981-82.

Wheeler (4-1) gave up three hits, walked a pair and struck out eight in beating the Guardians for the first time in three career starts. The right-hander is 3-0 in his last five outings, and the Phillies have won 11 of 14.

Blue Jays 9, Mariners 1

George Springer hit a three-run homer as Toronto defeated host Seattle to complete a sweep of the three-game series.

Addison Barger also went deep for the Blue Jays, who went 4-2 on a six-game trip in which they lost the first two games to the Los Angeles Angels. Toronto’s Eric Lauer (1-0) pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. The left-hander allowed just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts.

Dylan Moore homered for the Mariners, who had won each of their previous nine series. Seattle starter Bryce Miller (2-4) went five-plus innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits, with two walks and three strikeouts in taking the loss.
