No. 2 draft pick Chase Burns called up by Reds for MLB debut

The time is now for right-hander Chase Burns, after the Cincinnati Reds purchased the contract of the No. 2 overall selection from last year’s MLB Draft.

Burns is set to make his major league debut when he starts in Tuesday’s home game against the New York Yankees.

In a corresponding move, the Reds optioned right-hander Yosver Zulueta to Triple-A Louisville.

Burns, 22, has been on a rocket ride through the Reds’ system this season. He made his minor league debut at Single-A Dayton, and in just 13 appearances he has pitched over three different levels, including two starts at Triple-A Louisville.

Burns has gone a combined 7-3 with a 1.77 ERA in his 13 starts, including a 1-0 record with a 2.19 ERA in 12 1/3 innings at Louisville.

In 2024 at Wake Forest, Burns was 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts, following two seasons at Tennessee.

Zulueta, 27, had a 3.86 ERA in two relief outings this season and has a career 4.82 ERA in 14 relief outings over the past three seasons.
