Eugenio Suarez doubled in two runs to cap a seven-run rally in the ninth inning and lead the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to a stunning 11-10 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday and sweep their three-game series.
The Diamondbacks trailed 10-4 entering the ninth inning against reliever Scott Blewett. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his ninth homer, a solo shot that extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and Alek Thomas followed with a two-run homer. With closer Raisel Iglesias (3-5) in the game, Ketel Marte singled in a run and Ildemaro Vargas followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 10-9.
Suarez, who struck out to start the inning, doubled into the left field corner to drive in Marte and Vargas and give the Diamondbacks their first lead of the game. Kendall Graveman (1-0) allowed one run in the eighth while Shelby Miller pitched around a walk in the ninth to earn his sixth save.
The Braves built a 6-0 lead by scoring five runs in the third. They also got a solo homer from Austin Riley in the fifth and back-to-back homers in the sixth from Ronald Acuna Jr. and Drake Baldwin.
White Sox 3, Tigers 2 (10 innings)
Josh Rojas doubled as part of a three-hit day and Tim Elko belted a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as host Chicago salvaged a four-game split against Detroit.
Austin Slater laid down a sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Elko, whose winning hit gave the White Sox just their third victory in 11 games. Chase Meidroth, Edgar Quero and Michael A. Taylor each had two hits for Chicago.
Wenceel Perez homered and singled for the Tigers, who had two runners on with no outs in the top of the 10th but failed to push across a run. Zach McKinstry and Javier Baez also had two hits for Detroit.
Blue Jays 9, Phillies 1
Both Myles Straw and Tyler Heineman drove in three runs to help host Toronto race by Philadelphia for the Blue Jays’ seventh win in eight games.
Bo Bichette had a two-run homer and a single for Toronto, extending his hit streak to nine games, and Alejandro Kirk posted three hits. Chris Bassitt struck out five and allowed one run on five hits to improve to 5-0 in his career against the Phillies.
Nick Castellanos doubled and had two singles for Philadelphia, which has dropped six of its last seven. Trea Turner also had a double, and Kyle Schwarber singled for the Phillies’ only other hit.
Athletics 14, Twins 3
Tyler Soderstrom recorded two home runs and six RBIs, Brent Rooker drove in three runs, and the Athletics cruised to a win over visiting Minnesota in West Sacramento, Calif., to snap a nine-game losing streak.
Max Muncy and Jacob Wilson each had a homer for the A’s, who racked up 17 hits — their second-highest total of the season.
Matt Wallner blasted a solo home run, Ty France doubled in a run and Brooks Lee had an RBI single for the Twins, whose three-game winning streak came to a halt.
Cardinals 6, Royals 5 (10 innings), Game 1
Willson Contreras’ walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning lifted host St. Louis past Kansas City in Game 1 of a split doubleheader.
Contreras, playing in his 1,000th game, also hit a double and scored a run. Ivan Herrera added a two-run homer for the Cardinals. Starter Miles Mikolas allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out two. Reliever JoJo Romero (2-3) claimed the victory after allowing an unearned run in the top of the 10th.
Royals starter Noah Cameron blanked the Cardinals for six innings on two hits while striking out three and walking two. Reliever Carlos Estevez (2-1) took the loss. Vinny Pasquantino drove in two runs and Jonathan India had a homer and two RBIs. Jac Caglianone, in his second major league game, hit a run-scoring double for his first hit and RBI.
Orioles 4, Mariners 3
Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson belted back-to-back home runs as part of a three-run sixth inning that vaulted visiting Baltimore to a win over Seattle.
Rutschman went 3-for-4 for the Orioles, who picked up a season-high sixth straight win. Emmanuel Rivera had a double while Ryan O’Hearn picked up a single.
Cal Raleigh posted his MLB-best 24th home run of the season to stake the Mariners to a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, one of his two hits on the day. J.P. Crawford doubled and singled for Seattle, and Miles Mastrobuoni also finished with two hits.
Giants 3, Padres 2
Dominic Smith capped a three-run third inning with a two-RBI double and Robbie Ray became the National League’s first eight-game winner as San Francisco salvaged a four-game home split against San Diego.
Making his second appearance for the Giants after signing as an in-season free agent, Smith had three of the team’s six hits, including the biggest with two on and two out in the three-run third inning. Ray (8-1) went seven innings, allowing just two runs and four hits while striking out nine against just one walk.
Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning for the Padres. Starter Dylan Cease (1-5) took the loss after going five innings and striking out seven. He gave up three runs, five hits and three walks.
Dodgers 6, Mets 5
Michael Conforto had a go-ahead RBI single to cap a three-run eighth inning, and host Los Angeles rallied past New York in the final game this season between 2024 National League Championship Series foes.
Will Smith drove in two runs and Mookie Betts reached base four times with an RBI double as the Dodgers won for the second time in the four-game series. The Mets won the season series 4-3. Alex Vesia (2-0) recorded the last out of the eighth inning to pick up the win and Tanner Scott pitched the ninth for his 11th save. Los Angeles starter Landon Knack gave up four runs with a career-high five walks in 3 1/3 innings.
Pete Alonso hit a home run for New York, his third in two games. Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte also homered, with Marte finishing with a season-high three hits. Left-hander David Peterson was left with a no-decision after giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings. Reed Garrett (1-2) took the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) in the eighth.
